LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Bellarmine field hockey goes on the road Friday to face a familiar opponent – the Ball State Cardinals in Muncie, Ind.

Bellarmine’s (1-11, 0-4 MAC) lone victory this year came against Ball State in the season opener by a final score of 2-1 at Trager Stadium.  The first meeting on Aug. 29 was classified as a non-conference meeting because of the second matchup scheduled in Muncie.  Teams in the Mid-American Conference are normally only scheduled to face each other one time throughout the regular season.

Last Meeting with Ball State

The initial game between the Knights and Cardinals was Bellarmine’s first win in the Division I era. Bellarmine struck first in that matchup with a Peyton Hobson goal in the second quarter.  Ball State tied the game 1-1 at the end of the third quarter, but Amber Hofenk Jerembo’s early fourth quarter goal was the difference that day for the Knights.  Goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter started off her senior campaign strong with nine saves against the Cardinals.

Ball State This Season

Ball State (4-9, 2-2 MAC) has lost four of its last five games but is tied for third in the MAC standings.  The Cardinals were selected fourth in the MAC pre-season poll.  BSU most recently faced No. 6 Northwestern in Muncie and lost 6-1.  Ball State’s last win came against Appalachian State last Friday by a final score of 1-0 in overtime.  The most impressive losses for the Cardinals this season were 1-0 defeats against No. 22 Ohio State and Indiana.

The Cardinals are led by freshman Agostina Giudice, who has tallied two goals and three assists this season.  Hannah Johnston and Ally Butler have split time in the cage for the Cardinals.  Johnston has received more time and started against Bellarmine in the season opener (3.66 GAA, .714 save percentage).

Knights Notes

Anna Crump had the best two-game stretch of her career last weekend, scoring three goals and tallying an assist over two games.  Crump had two of Bellarmine’s four goals at Ohio last Friday, when the Knights scored their most goals in the Division I era.

Hofenk Jerembo scored her fourth goal of the season on Sunday against Appalachian State to tie Crump for the team lead.  Hofenk Jerembo has at least one point in each of her last four games.

McWhorter has at least nine saves in each of her last three games and still ranks third in the nation in total saves this season with 102.
