According to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, Los Angeles Kings prospect Brandt Clarke will not be on Canada’s World Junior Championship camp roster when Hockey Canada releases it on Wednesday.
The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler reported that the decision to leave him off the roster was not COVID-19 or illness-related.
The expected decision comes as Clarke leads the OHL in scoring by a defenseman with 23 points in 18 games. Clarke made Canada’s World Junior summer showcase roster earlier this summer and looked like a near-shoo-in to make the final roster with fellow defenders Kaiden Guhle and Owen Power.
At the recent U-18 World Championship, Clarke had seven points in as many games with Canada to make the tournament all-star team en route to a gold medal. Two years ago, Clarke led the OHL in assists by a rookie with 32 before playing last year in the top Slovak men’s league.
Clarke was drafted eighth overall by the Kings last summer, signing his entry-level contract in August.
