BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s cross country swept the Ohio Valley Conference Runner of the Week Awards for the second time this season as Panthers runners Dustin Hatfield and Lindsey Carlson captured the award this week.
In his first race of the season, Hatfield finished first out of 149 competitors at the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State. The race was held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which has hosted 13 NCAA Championship. The redshirt senior finished with an OVC-best 8K time of 24:22.7, two seconds ahead of a runner from Purdue. Hatfield helped his team tie for second out of 12 teams, in a field that included nationally-ranked Purdue and Indiana.
In her second-ever cross country meet, Carlson (who played four years of soccer for EIU) won her second career race, finishing first out of 133 at the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State. The race was held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which has hosted 13 NCAA Championships. Carlson finished the 5K race in 17:37.8, five seconds ahead of second place. It marks the second-fastest 5K time in the OVC this season, trailing only her time from two weeks ago. She helped EIU finish fourth in a field of 14 teams, which included nationally-ranked Indiana and regionally-ranked Purdue.
EIU runners Jaime Marcos and Carlson both picked up OVC Runner of the Week honors two weeks ago after both won the EIU Walt Crawford Open men’s and women’s races.
EIU will return to action on Oct. 2 at the Louisville Classic.
