Gary Lineker made his feelings very clear on the outcome of this year’s Formula 1 result during Sunday night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The thrilling climax of the 2021 season saw all eyes on Abu Dhabi as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, level on points after the penultimate race, went for the title.

Verstappen started in poll position but Hamilton got in front after a fantastic start and looked on course to win his 8th F1 title before an accident on the track saw the Safety Car come out.

That course of action saw Hamilton lose his sizeable lead and, with it all to play for on the final lap, Verstappen, aided by fresh tyres, overtook to take the win and the title.

The result sparked controversy across the world, with many fans arguing that it wasn’t a fair outcome, given that former BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner Hamilton had built up a lead only to see it disappear through no fault of his own.

Verstappen’s title win and the controversy surrounding it, featured in the live SPOTY broadcast which went out on BBC1 on Sunday and, after seeing the footage on screen, former England striker turned Match of the Day presenter Gary remarked: “That was the most incredible end to a season that had absolutely everything…. apart from, possibly, a fair final lap.”

Fans watching at home appreciated Gary’s honest take on things, with one tweeting: “It takes a football pundit to say it how it is. Not like the F1 pundits sitting on the fence. Thanks Gary.”

A second reacted: “Fair play to @GaryLineker for saying what a lot of cowards in F1 are not saying. That was an unfair last lap,” with another posting: “Not often I agree with @GaryLineker but well done and thank you for saying the F1 season had everything…apart from a fair final lap. Bang on and bravo.”

Moving things on,Gary’s co-host Alex was quick to praise Lewis, before the football legend acknowledged that Lewis had been knighted this week.

This year’s Sports Personality of the Year went to Emma Raducanu after the teenage tennis star’s amazing win in the US Open.
