Marc Bergevin wasn’t unemployed for long.
A little over a month after being fired by the Montreal Canadiens for guiding the team to its worst start in franchise history, Bergevin is making his way back into an NHL front office by joining the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday evening in a consulting capacity as a senior advisor to GM Rob Blake.
Bergevin led the Canadiens to the Eastern Conference Final and an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final throughout his nine-year tenure in Montreal.
The years in between those achievements, however, were filled with constant mediocrity, as the Canadiens failed to make the playoffs on four separate occasions and were dismissed in the first round twice, as well.
Under Bergevin, the Canadiens selected nine players in the first round of the NHL entry draft. Just three remain with the organization today, as the Canadiens struggled to ever establish a strong developmental system during Bergevin’s time at the helm.
However, no one can take away the fact that the team he built made the Stanley Cup Final just a few short months ago.
Perhaps an advisory role is where Bergevin can provide the most value, making him an influential voice in hockey decisions while not being the person responsible for carrying them out.
For Kings fans, that’s all they can hope for.
