The Evander Kane saga is not over yet.
The NHLPA has officially filed a grievance against the San Jose Sharks in response to the team terminating Kane’s contract after he cleared unconditional waivers on Sunday afternoon.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Sharks indeed terminated Kane’s contract last night after he passed through waivers unclaimed, therein making the 30-year-old winger a UFA. However, with this grievance now pending, a set of ground rules will need to be determined for how Kane’s free agency can proceed, for if he ultimately signs with another team in the coming weeks and also wins his grievance claim, he could therein be signed to two contracts with two different franchises at the same time.
Such an outcome would truly be unprecedented.
On the Sharks’ side of things, the organization claims that their sufficient grounds to terminate Kane’s contract lies in him allegedly violating the AHL’s COVID-19 protocols in late December.
As Friedman reported as well, Kane tested positive for COVID-19 on Dec. 21 while with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda and entered the league’s health and safety protocols, which require a 10-day quarantine. However, Kane apparently took a flight to Vancouver on Dec. 29, before his league-mandated quarantine was finished, with the Sharks arguing that he did not have medical clearance to do so.
Kane was reportedly expected to report back to the Barracuda on Dec. 31 once his 10-day quarantine was over, as well. According to Friedman’s report, Kane did not return to the Barracuda’s facility until Jan. 6.
With Kane having already served a 21-game suspension for violating the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols earlier this season, it will certainly be interesting to see how this situation plays out.
