SALEM, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee women’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 season-opening win over Roanoke on the road on Thursday.
Junior Gracie Caplice (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine’s School) (5) and sophomores Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) (3) and Nell Covington (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) (6) highlighted singles play for the Generals, as each won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Sophomore Gabi Moss (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Chaparral) won at No. 1 over Lucy Collins, 6-1, 6-0, and sophomore Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) defeated Halle Fernstrum, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2. In her collegiate debut, first-year Megan Donovan (Jacksonville, Fla. / The Bolles School) downed Julia Bassett by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
Covington and Caplice swept Sophie Bartholomaus and Dana Meyer, 8-0, in No. 3 doubles, Chalker and Donovan won, 8-1, at No. 2 and Carlton and senior Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy), who entered the season as the 19th-best doubles duo in the nation and eighth-best in the Atlantic South region, won by an 8-2 set score at No. 1.
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they open play at the ITA Southeast Region Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
