The QMJHL is taking an extended break as the holiday season approaches to hopefully put a dent in its rising COVID-19 case numbers.
According to an official announcement on the league’s website, the QMJHL has paused all activities until Jan. 7, 2022 effective immediately, with players expected to report back to their individual teams on Jan. 3 to undergo additional testing before regular-season games resume four days later.
The QMJHL is reportedly the only junior league to institute such a lengthy extension to the upcoming winter break, with Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reporting that both the OHL and WHL are not planning on following suit with extended pauses of their own.
“The health and safety of all players and staff members remains our top priority,” the league said in a statement released early Tuesday afternoon.
“Therefore, it is appropriate under the current circumstances to remain cautious and to extend the Holiday break,”
Any games that will be postponed as a result of these newly-announced measures will be rescheduled at a later date.
