ON-TAP: Eastern Illinois will have a quick turnaround time this week as they play a rare weekday match against SIUE on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. The Panthers are travelling to Edwardsville to play at the Courgars in First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center. The Panthers are still in search of their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season.
ALL-TIME SERIES: EIU is currently losing the all-time series against SIUE, 11-14. They previously beat the Panthers earlier this season in Lantz Arena by a score of 3-1. During the condensed COVID-19 conference schedule last spring, the Cougars took both matches by a score of 3-0.
OVC UPDATE: This marks the sixth week of conference play for the OVC. Currently, Austin Peay leads the conference with an 10-1 record in the OVC and a overall record of 17-7. Last weekend they swept Belmont in both matches 3-0. Eastern Illinois currently ranks tenth in the conference with a 0-11 conference record, but are 7-14 overall. The Cougars of SIUE rank eighth in the conference with a 2-9 record and a 5-17 record overall. SIUE is currently on a four game losing streak after losing the past two weekends to Southeast Missouri and UT Martin.
OVC INDIVIDUAL LEADERS: Kameryn Sillmon currently ranks fourth in the OVC in hitting percentage with a .287 and Emily Wilcox sits in fifth with a .276 percentage. Sillmon also ranks ninth in the OVC in blocks with an average of 0.93. Danielle Allen is in ninth place in kills per set with 3.01, and has 205 kills on the season. Summerlyn Smith sits at sixth in assists per set with 6.53. Kylie Michael regains her top spot in the conference in aces per set with 0.37.
DEFENSE LED BY BLOCKS: The defense this past weekend was led by a stout front that created 30 block assists and 16 total blocks. Elisavet Papageorgiou led the team in blocks this weekend with 10 block assists including a career high six block assists in a lost against Morehead State. Sillmon also provided seven block assists throughout the weekend. The Panthers also had contributions from Wilcox with five block assists, and Michael who had four block assists and one block solo. EIU out blocked Morehead State 16-15 in their two matches last weekend.
NEXT UP: After Eastern Illinois travels to Edwardsville for their last meeting against the Cougars this season, the Panthers will return to Lantz Arena this weekend to face-off against the Tigers of Tennessee State. Matches will be held on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. LiveStats and ESPN+ will be made available.
HEAD COACH: Sara Thomas enters her second season as the head coach at Eastern Illinois and marks her first full season at the helm. Thomas is assisted by Manolo Concepcion and Ana Paula Zandona. The Panthers look to build off their 2-14 record last season in a condensed COVID-19 season.
