Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore quarterback Mat Dzierski scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 0:39 remaining to lift Christopher Newport to a 28-24 win over Washington and Lee in the football season-opener for both teams.
 
The Generals (0-1) broke a 21-21 tie on the prior possession by moving the ball 36 yards on six plays, finishing the drive with a 35-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Arturo Ramirez (Providence Village, Texas / Braswell) for a 24-21 lead.
 
CNU began the next series on the 25-yardline, marching 75 yards on 13 plays.  The Captains converted on two third-and-long situations on the drive.  Dzierski picked up the first on a 3rd-and-12 from his own 36-yardline, scrambling 17 yards for a first down.  The second was a 14-yard strike to senior tight end Brandon Johnson on a 3rd-and-8 from the 20-yardline with just under one-minute remaining.  Dzierski completed the comeback two plays later.
 

W&L advanced to midfield on the final series, but ran out of time and the Captains walked away with a win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
 
Christopher Newport seized a 7-0 lead on a 12-yard touchdown run by Dzierski with 8:20 left in the first period.  The Generals tied the game at 7-7 with 5:47 left in the half on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge).  His run capped a 15-play, 66-yard drive that used 7:51 on the game clock.  CNU drove into W&L territory on the next series, but junior linebacker David Onyejekwe (Falls Church, Va. / McLean) tipped a pass and then corralled his own deflection for an interception.  He proceeded to return the ball 71 yards to the Captains’ 3-yardline, setting up a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion) one play later for a 14-7 lead with 2:56 left on the clock.
 
CNU battled back and marched 78 yards on eight plays, tying the game heading into the break (14-14) with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Dzierski to junior wide receiver Xander Jedlick with just 26 seconds remaining in the half.
 
Neither team could make headway in the third period, but CNU broke through for a 21-14 lead just 1:51 into the fourth period on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Dzierski to Jedlick. 
 

W&L responded on the following possession, driving 64 yards on just four plays to tie it up at 21-21 with 10:49 left in the game.  Senior quarterback Jack Pollard (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) began the series with a 40-yard run and senior running back Coby Kirkland (Duncan, Okla. / Duncan) finished it off with a 20-yard touchdown run.
 
Christopher Newport out-gained the Generals, 354-225, making good on 8-of-13 third down conversions.
 

Pollard led the W&L offense by rushing for 93 yards on 18 carries and completing 4-of-10 passes for 52 yards.  Breece rushed 12 times for 35 yards and one touchdown, Kirkland had two carries for 21 yards and one score, and Wertz rushed two times for 10 yards and one touchdown.  Junior defensive end Robert Poindexter (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett) posted a team-best six tackles and one sack.  Onyejekwe had three tackles, one sack and one interception.
 
Dzierski led the Captains by completing 29-of-39 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns.  He also rushed 14 times for 47 yards and two more touchdowns.  Senior wide receiver Garrison Mayo caught 10 passes for 91 yards and Jedlick snared four balls for 88 yards and two touchdowns.  Senior linebacker Conner Ryan led the CNU defense with eight tackles.
 
Washington and Lee is back in action next Saturday when it hosts Sewanee for a 2:00 pm contest.
